If you are a die-hard star wars fan you'll love Rogue Squadron. The story line of this game goes along with the series of star wars books. It follows Luke and a small fleet of rebel pilots as they protect cargo and destroy imperial installations. I'm starting with graphics and sound, the two elements that most people want in a game. Due to the use of the new expansion pak I will try to compare the difference in graphics.

With the expansion pak the frame rate is much faster and the graphics are as smooth as silk. Without this piece of hardware the graphics are choppy and slow in a few places. With or without the expansion pak Rogue Squadron is still a fun game to play. The sound is quite amazing. Most of the music is familiar star wars music with a few scores of Shadows of the Empire, plus some new tunes. With lasers blasting and explosions Rogue Squadron makes you fell like you're right in the thick of it. In this game they use a lot of dialog. The mission breifings are all done in dialog and through out the missions people are yelling back and forth over the intercom. You can compare this to Starfox64.

As you fly 1 of the 6 ships available in this game you will recognize some familiar spots such as Mos Eisley Spaceport. There is a good variety of ships to choose from including a new V-wing and the Millenium Falcon (secret). The ships all perform differently. The A-wing is fast and easy to manuver and the Y-wing is slow. All of the ships have their advantages. The Y-wing is slow yet it has better sheilds and it carries bombs. The ships include a number of weapons like lasers, missles, and bombs. All ships include lasers, a secondary weapon, and most of them a special weapon. There is a total of 15 levels or missions in this game. They all have a great deal of variety and objectives. In one level you have to escort and protect rebel cargo from tie fighters and probe droids, in another you are destroying an imperial factory that produces AT-AT's and AT-ST's. I was well pleased with the variety and different objectives this game has to offer.

All in all Rogue Squadron is a great game. The latter levels get quite challenging. I have found little wrong with this game. They could have done a better job on the water though. You can't even tell it is water until you crash into it. I was impressed that the patterns were rarely repeated. There is however too much use of the fog effect to hide pop-up. I give this game a 8.9 out of 10.
